Mapping
One of the most common things a professional organizer hears from their clients is, “I was really motivated and got started [organizing], but I just got too overwhelmed and stopped”. The client will reveal to the organizer about the occasion(s) that they were suddenly motivated to clear out their clutter and get organized. Why does this seem to happen?

Taking Time to Breathe
Many people lead very organized lives and are able to stay on top of papers and clutter until something happens in their lives and throws them for a loop. Perhaps it’s a death in the family, a divorce, a new baby, or a new job. Whatever the change may be, it alters their course and they are often unable to rally. It is this inability to move ahead that begins the piles of papers on the desk or kitchen counter, the closets that can’t be opened because of the stuff in them, and beds we are no longer able to sleep in due to all of the items on top

The Dreaded Purge
I don’t know about you, but they did not offer any classes in elementary school, middle school, or high school about basic organizing techniques let alone dealing with paper or paper management. I was not taught the art of filing and keeping it up. I knew of people who had the just right “Trapper Keeper” (I’m aware that I am dating myself with that comment), and looked like they had their act together when it came to looking organized, and probably concluded that their parents must be organized.
