5 Key Tips to Help You Win New Business zed pages, etc.If you are going into business for the first time, it can be both exciting and unnerving, yet every year more and more people are making the choice to go it alone. The Small Business Service (SBS), an executive agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, recently published Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Statistics for the UK in 2005, which revealed some interesting numbers. There were an estimated 4.3 million business enterprises in the UK at the start of 2005, an increase of 59,000 (1.4 per cent) on the start of 2004. However, Small businesses (0 to 49 employees), but typically with no employees represented 3.2 million, equivalent to 72.8 per cent of all enterprises.Unfortunately, it is also a well-publicised fact that the key reasons new businesses fail, particularly in the first year, are poor management of cash flow and inability to find a consistent flow of new business. Research by the Small Business Research Trust has established that small businesses represent the overwhelming majority of insolvencies – 85% in the latest survey – and you can see the link. Bad debts kill small firms.Over the years I have established several businesses, both on my own and with others, and the following is an attempt to highlight 5 key things that I believe should help you to find new business. Saving Face In The Workplace - Graceful Recovery From Mortifying MomentsIf you’re anything like me, you do stupid things every day when, mercifully, there’s no one to see: tripping on flat surfaces, buttoning your shirt too quickly and putting the buttons in the wrong hole, getting lipstick on your teeth. But when you spend at least 40 hours of your week in the office, you’re guaranteed a public gaffe every now and then. I’ve perfected three failsafe moves to help you save face after a less-than-graceful workplace faux pas. Here they are in action.Face Saver #1: Act like nothing is wrongOn my third day of work at a new company, I managed to walk through three floors of my building and about six blocks on rush-hour frenzied streets, passing several police cars and at least three packed commuter buses, with the back of my skirt tucked up behind my backpack. I don’t mean that it was just hanging a little strangely — it was all the way up. And how did I discover that I had bared my flowery underwear to hundreds of people? Turns out the attractive thirtysomething businessman walking behind me wasn’t having a funny cell-phone conversation after all; he was laughing at my derriere.Despite the fact that I was dying inside, I lifted my bag, freed my skirt, and gave him a wink before climbing onto my crowded train. I heard a few snickers as I made my way to an empty space, most Unfortunately there are many search engine optimisation strategies still being used by ill informed or unscrupulous Internet marketers and webmasters that became obsolete a long time ago. In many cases, these strategies are not only ineffective but are now considered spam and can have dire consequences for your rankings and even result in your web site being banned permanently from some engines. The following is a list of what are now considered within the professional Internet marketing world to be the Top 10 worst search engine optimisation tactics: 1: Doorway Pages (or Gateway Pages, Information Pages, Ghost pages, etc.) These are generally multiple web pages that are devoid of useful content but heavily optimised for search engine rankings with each page being created for a particular key phrase. The idea of this concept was to fool the search engines into thinking that these pages were highly relevant and provide top rankings for them under their targeted phrase. When a surfer came across on the page they were often shown a "Click Here to Visit Our Web Site" link that the surfer had to click on to actually arrive at the legitimate website. Isn’t that what they were trying to do when the ended up at this page? Once among the most popular methods of attaining multiple search engine placements, doorway pages were widely used until 2000 by many Internet marketers and web masters. Since then, Doorway pages have become the most obvious form of Spam that a search engine can find and the repercussions are dire if such a tactic is employed. Unfortunately, many web masters and marketers still employ this tactic and then wonder why they suddenly drop from the search engines results after being banned for using this technique. 2: Invisible Text Invisible text is used in a variety of ways in an effort to increase the frequency of keywords in the body text of a web page. Some methods are: making text the same colour as the background of the web page, hiding text behind layers, placing text at the very bottom of over-sized pages, etc. This tactic is particularly perilously as it is obvious to search engine spiders. What The Heck Is a Meme And Why Is It Important To Small Business Marketing? ame obsolete a long time ago. In many cases, these strategies are not only ineffective but are now considered spam and can have dire consequences for your rankings and even result in your web site being banned permanently from some engines.I wrote the phrase, "Irusha likes cake" on my brand new whiteboard and left it there for a couple of weeks. I was consulting a large financial company, and Irusha was the name of the guy that sat next to me - and a good friend of mine. The company had a brand new office space - and I thought a clean whiteboard is a sin, so I wrote the phrase as a joke.In the two or three weeks it was up many people stopped by and looked at the whiteboard and puzzled at it. It had a bit of a poetic meter and people would walk away muttering, "Irusha likes cake?"What happened next was truly astounding. Irusha would be introduced to people at meetings and they would say, "I hear you like cake?" If someone in the building had a birthday they would always save a piece a cake for Irusha. Many times these are people who didn't know Irusha and had never seen what I wrote on the whiteboard. For the next few years this guy got a lot of cake. I may have a strange sense of humor, but sometimes it pays off."Irusha likes cake" is a meme. A what? A meme, pronounced MEEM, is a concept introduced in Richard Dawkins' 1967 book The Selfish Gene. It is basically a self-propagating unit of social imitation. It's something that people repeat and pass along. Business Grants and Loans - Meeting the CriteriaOne of the best places to research the availability of business grants and loans is the Small Business Administration, an agency of the federal government with a mandate to help business, especially small business succeed. The Small Business Administration which has local offices in all major metropolitan areas has three different loan programs, each one designed to help various segments of the business market get access to business grants and loans. They deliver these loans through their banking and other lending institutional partners and while they provide the money and information an individual business must apply directly to a lending institution to get business grants and loans. They suggest that you go to the meeting with the lenders well prepared, with a copy of a business plan, personal and business financial statements and projections, as well as any collateral that may be available to secure the financing. The most popular form of business grants and loans made available through the Small Business Administration are called 7 (a) loans. These business loans are so named after the section in the Small Business Act that offers the provision of these loans. In order to be eligible for this type of business loan a business must have good character, quality management capabilities, and a good business plan. If a busind for a particular key phrase. Talk Radio SuccessYou do not have to hire a publicist or advertise through a booking service to promote your books on talk radio. My friend Stephen Schochet and I have been scheduling our own radio appearances for several years. Working independently, we have, between us, logged over 1,000 interviews, and we continue to sell our books, CDs, and audiotapes year in and year out.Our system may not be right for everyone. After all, we are both pretty good amateur publicists. We know how to dangle bait and reel the stations in, and our schedules are fairly flexible. But if you feel comfortable promoting your products, will work harder for yourself than anyone else will, and are well-organized and disciplined, you may want to take advantage of our experience.Opening MovesFor starters, we work with a comprehensive database of radio shows–one that I research and constantly update–and contact the hosts or the producers directly ourselves. Sometimes we call them. Other times we fax, and sometimes we e-mail them. There is no one magical right or wrong initial approach. Each show operates a little differently, and we often like to mix up the routine.Regardless of how we make the initial contact, we always follow up. We never assume that the show is not interested if we do not get an immediate response. Hosts, after all, are extremely buDoorway pages have become the most obvious form of Spam that a search engine can find and the repercussions are dire if such a tactic is employed. Advertising Primer for Fast LearnersAdvertising, when done well is a very effective way to increase your customer base and ultimately grow your bottom line. Many businesses have no idea how to advertise; they do a little bit here and a little bit there and end up saying that advertising doesn’t work. Advertising, like everything else in business, requires a systematic, consistent approach. Even when you are getting results, tweaking a good message can make it a great message.Fundamentals of good advertising:1. Use a great title…not a cute title but one that grabs attention and communicates what the purpose of the ad is. If you start the ad with the name of your business, you will discourage a large portion of prospective customers from reading your ad because if they don’t know what you do they will often assume you are not speaking to them.2. Test titles and messages on an on-going basis and measure the response, small adjustments in the ad can increase response by 100% or much more.3. Take the response you got from an ad and divide the cost by the response to see if it was worthwhile. An ad that doesn’t elicit a response is too expensive no matter how little you spent on the advertising. Give it time don’t just advertise once.4. Don’t advertise everywhere. Initially choose one medium and one company for your advertising and stized pages, etc. This tactic is particularly perilously as it is obvious to search engine spiders. In 1999, search engines began implementing automated methods of detection and penalization. For legitimate ways to use text to greater effect within your web site download a copy of our book “Start at the Beginning” here: http://www.enable-uk.co.uk/html/book_2.html 3: Content Misrepresentation Misleading search engines into believing your web page is about topic ‘A' when it is in fact about ‘B'. This tactic was used primarily for the promotion of adult, gambling, and other extremely competitive search markets. Unfortunately this tactic is still in use by unscrupulous web masters and marketers. The fact is that this tactic is the simplest for a search engine to identify and the result will be swift and complete; banishment from the search engine index indefinitely. The worst offence against the search engines is to try to fool them. 4: Redirects Redirects have some innocent uses (practical, legal, etc.) but they are also used to mislead search engines by making them believe that the page they have indexed is highly relevant to a particular search phrase. When a surfer visits the page, however, they don’t see the original page and are redirected to an entirely different one. In most cases search engines have advanced enough to see this technique being used and act accordingly. In fact they usually ignore any page with a redirect (assuming correctly that the content is useless) while spidering the redirect destination instead, i.e.; the page that the surfer sees. Redirects, unless blatantly Spam-related do not directly result in intentional ranking penalties; however, they have no positive effect either. 5: Heading Tag Duplication Heading Tags were created to highlight page headings in order of importance. Thus the Heading Tags that are available: H1, H2, H3, etc. This duplication technique involves implementing more than one H1 tag into a web page in order to enhance a particular keyword or phrase. This tactic is still very prevalent and likely still works on some search engines; however, none of the major search engines will respond well to this technique as it has been identified as a common manipulation. 6: Alt Tag Stuffing Alt Tag stuffing is the act of adding unnecessary or repetitive keywords into the Alt Tag (words that appear when you hover over an image with you mouse pointer). The Alt Tag is meant to be a textual description of the image it is attached to. There is nothing wrong with tailoring the Alt tag to meet your keyword goals IF the tag is still understandable and if it appropriately describes the image. The offence occurs when an Alt tag has obvious keyword repetition/filler that a search engine can key in on as spam. 7: Comment Tag Stuffing Comment Tags are used to include useful design comments in the background source code (html) when creating a web page. These tags should be used only for adding technical instructions or reminders; however, these tags were often used to artificially increase the keyword count for particular search phrase
