To Improve Your Sales - Begin At The Very Beginning
Many people struggle with selling. Whether as employed and trained sales personnel, working in a professional services firm with a client fee target, or as a small business owner who needs customers to survive you need to sell. Why is it an issue? For many it starts with their own self-perception and how they, personally, relate to selling – or what they perceive as selling! Certainly, for many people the idea is that sales people have to spend their time finding potential customers (or clients!) and then convincing them to buy the product or service. This may have to mean pushing, manipul

    That's Learnertainment
“What we learn with pleasure we never forget.” Louis MercierIntroduction I remember one particularly difficult college class I taught, and the two students who were likely to fail. They, like many in a growing segment of learners, had short attention spans. They expected more value in less time, but wouldn't listen well enough to find that value. Instead, they would become bored, and ignore the learning. One day, I heard the two praising James Cameron's movie Titanic (1997). Immediately, an incongruity hit me. Titanic is three hours long! Those would have mutinied if I
“Manners are made up of trivialities of deportment
which can be easily learned if one does not happen to know them;”
    -Emily Post

While Ms. Post’s advice about the appropriate dress for a butler in a well-appointed house and the rules of conduct for a d?butante are hopelessly outdated, good manners still count. Without a doubt, email is an efficient and cost-effective way to build and maintain relationships, whether with your organization’s supporters or with your own nearest and dearest. But those relationships will be stronger and healthier if you heed the do's and don’ts of polite email society – they’re simple and apply in equal measure to both groups.

    • Out of inbox, out of mind? Gaps in communication for prolonged periods are a sure way to let a relationship fizzle out. Email lists that have been left idle for extended periods of time tend to have lower response rates (I don’t recommend testing this!). Unless you are actually trying to ditch a wearisome ex, it's best to maintain regular contact with your supporters, just as you would with friends or family, even if that requires some creativity and legwork when the content is not abundant. But be sure to maintain integrity – always instill your messages with some value because...

Hey Small Business Owners, How Many Customers Are You Losing in Your Bathrooms?
Most Fridays, my husband and I patronize several restaurants established by small business owners. We use this time to enjoy a good meal and have the opportunity to talk away from the home. Over the course of the last few years, the number of available dining establishments has diminished by one a year. The reason is due to that both of us have seen wait staff using the bathroom facilities without properly washing their hands.Last night, we lost another favorite restaurant. This restaurant was one of my favorites due to its early bird specials; fresh oven baked bread, good customer se

          Succession Planning
Businesses of all sizes and within all industries often suffer from poor planning. A key area which needs consideration is succession planning for both ownership and key management. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERY BUSINESS OWNER TO PLAN FOR THE DAY WHEN THEY WILL NO LONGER BE INVOLVED IN THEIR BUSINESS ON A FULL TIME BASIS.Often, we hear of small to medium sized businesses built primarily on the drive and enthusiasm of a key individual, only to falter when that person is no longer there. Similarly, larger public companies can experience great turmoil if their management and owners

How to Write a Marketing Plan
Most businesspeople agree that good planning is essential for success. Even so, it’s surprising how many companies don’t create a thorough plan to generate and manage their customers.A marketing plan is a detailed roadmap that outlines all your marketing strategies, tactics, activities, costs and projected results over a period of time. The plan keeps your entire team focused on specific goals – it’s a critical resource for your entire company.A good marketing plan typically includes: Financial goals Positioning strategy Brand

        • Keep it simple. It is important to keep your messages simple and clear. No legalese, no insider jargon, no buzzwords, and no policy wonk language, please! Words like “churlishness” and “pernicious” belong on GMAT study guide, not in email communications. No one wants to read an email about "H.R. 4526 bill to extend the discretionary spending limits through fiscal year 2011, referred to the Committee on the Budget, and in addition to the Committee on Rules for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned."
