Today, we live in an uncertain world. We can not predict what will happen in the next second. If you can, then you must me something else other than a living being. Today, we are constantly terrified by the uncertainty of the next moment.As I write this article, I don’t actually know what will happen the next moment. A new inventory in technology may jeopardize my current work as a typist. As I type, I do so with fear because I don’t know weather my boss will be coming back the next moment with a robot that will type more effective, accurate and efficiently than I do. If such happens, that means that I will lose my current job as a typist.I hope I am not the only one that is engulfed with phobia when it comes to sustaining ones current work. I thank God for giving man the ability to adapt and change. How will you feel if a robot is waiting to replace you in your current work? Do you think it is not possible? Please don’t think that it is not possible.By the year 2050, I believe the world will be a digital village. With the pace at which electronic books is replacing paper books, I know that one day in future, the paper books will become extinct. By the year 2050, news papers and magazines will be read on an electronic device which may invade the world in the next few seconds. In using our communication skills and abilities how we say something is just as important as what we say. Body language plays an extremely important part of our communication. In fact studies have been done showing that when we interact in a communication process the receiver actually receives 7% of the message verbally. The other 93% is received based on the non-verbal aspects of the message.How we dress, our gestures, facial expressions, posture and body movements are also being received when we verbally communicate with someone. That is why it is very important that our actions and non-verbal signals match what we are saying. When our words do not match our non-verbal signals we confuse the person we are trying to communicate with. When the listener gets their signals crossed this is when misunderstanding occurs.The idea of dress for success came into being based on the idea of how people read a person's physical representation. Like verbal symbols and signs, non verbal symbols like your clothing choices send a message of who you are. For example in the traditional business world it is assumed that how conservative one dresses determines how business orientated one is. I don’t happen to agree with this but in the traditional work settings this is a fact. You can go to a job interview with the best resume, but if you are dressed inappropriately you will not get the position. On the other hand you can have a half decent resume and dress to the nines and get the position. This is all based on the physical signal that says yes I dressed the part so you know I want the job.The same goes for how we say something. If we give a presentation on physical fitness with chips and soda in hand and slouching who is going to believe that we are fitness gurus. Boomers and Generation Y - The Computer Connection
It’s been interesting to watch the (sometimes forced) assimilation of Generation Y into the Boomer-dominated workforce of the early 21st century. Surely no two generations working together have been so disparate…at least that’s what we’re led to believe, and to an extent it’s true. There are vast differences in the two generations’ values and beliefs.But I would suggest the computer is one element that brings the two together and, at another level, clearly defines one important difference in the two groups.First, let’s look at the Baby Boomers. They entered the work force, for the most part, devoid of computer knowledge. The earliest of the Boomers knew computers as something called Univac that filled a room, had lots of blinking lights and, finally, made wrong predictions about presidential races. In the late 70s, or thereabouts (depending on the industry), the Boomers were presented with a work station and told the tube would replace paper and they had best begin the transition. Many – if not most – adopted the attitude that not only did they not understand this computer thing, but they also didn’t like – or trust – anyone who said they did. Paperless office, indeed!This kicking-and-screaming attitude toward using computers continued until the Boomers discovered the computer was the answer to one of the most pressing issues in their working lives: blame.Blame…you know, transferring responsibility when a failure occurs to another person or work group. This had always been a major problem for Boomers. Placing – or transferring – blame took precious time away from getting work accomplished.and often cut into coffee breaks and socializing. Departmental mistakes, however, necessitated group "blamestorming" (a term a colleague of mine created in the 80’s, although I’m certain it wasn’t an original thought)
