Training Departments Please Oil the Sales Engine lems of the human race. The challenge - how can a training department in a large U.S. insurer be a better partner to maximize sales?Could these statements be coming from your organization?“The training department has lost much of its focus in being a key partner to the Field.”“We have become reactive, more administrative and thus less effective in helping Field Management accomplish their goals.” I recently reviewed a proposal that was in its final stages before presentation to senior management. The report outlined a restructure and expansion of the learning department. The person leading the change wanted a set of outside eyes to read through it, what was missing, what might be unclear? As you would expect, they had given much thought to the required re-engineering within their area. Equally as important, the author of the report looked at the critical interdependencies with other areas of the organization, including recruiting and se -Calvin Coolidge Assessing the situation I Won't Tell My Lawyer but I Will Tell You My name is Rene Tse. In my early twenties I moved into my mother's condo to regroup and figure out my future. Within two months the living situation evaporated. Her husband staged a fake real estate sale to give me the "big hint" that he wanted me out of his house. I wound up homeless for two days. The first night I slept on the condo grounds of my mother's complex. The second night I slept under a pier near White Rock. I decided after hitting rock bottom and experiencing the freezing temperatures of sleeping in the winter outdoors that I would never allow myself to be put in this position again. I spent two months with a friend and slept in her basement and later worked for one year telemarketing 15 hours a day 7 days a week. In the midst of this telemarketing stint, I patched a three way conference call with a colleague who mentioned how a contact of his sells him leads. I got curious about it and wound up meeting this very individual, who builds websites and optimizes them so they have top ranking in the major search engines. This colleague would later become my mentor and coach.A general counsel of a large international consulting firm told us about his experience talking to an interviewer who had called to discuss his satisfaction level with his outside law firm. He had been using the services of a “high end, expensive” law firm out of New York.We asked if the interview questions allowed him to speak about all the issues that were on his mind regarding his relationship with his lawyers. His response was, “There were many small things that had been bothering me about our law firm but none that I thought were big enough to discuss with them. This interview allowed me to get some things off my chest.”That’s interesting, but his next comment floored us. “I know now if those issues had gone unchecked I may have gotten to such a level of annoyance I would have shopped for another law firm.” That’s pretty explosive. In other words, if his high- priced law firm had not taken the initiative to determine I purchased my first website from him for a few hundred dollars, the second one cost over a thousand. The employer also has the other details such as drug abuse and sexual harassment records to ensure that the candidate does not create any problems later on. However, this screening does not provide the employer an insight of the technical and general knowledge possessed by the candidate. A different kind of screening test would be required to check if the candidate would be well suited for the post.Employee screening tests must provide accurate and relevant information with regards to the industry for which the candidate has applied. Pre-employment test selectors can help the employers decide on what screening would be necessary for the post for while the applicant applied. It can be used to assess the applicant’s abilities with respect to the applied post. The test selector has a very wide datab I purchased my first website from him for a few hundred dollars, the second one cost over a thousand. Some leaders have the notion that HR serves its purpose primarily through hiring employees. It is up to the recruiter to evaluate, test and check references for potential employees, while making sure the candidate is a good fit for the department. However, there is so much more to this department than meets the eye.In a typical Corporate America environment, HR consists of the following Sr. Management and staff members:VP of HR: This senior management position is directly involved with business initiatives for the company, evaluation of vendors and services, and works alongside the CEO and CFO to address and suggest ideas and changes needed within the organization with regard to compensation and various legal issues.Director of HR: This position reports directly to the VP of HR and supervises HR managers, I purchased my first website from him for a few hundred dollars, the second one cost over a thousand. So much so that I could not get comfortable with overheads and tended to use two flipcharts on which I could prepare key messages on one and take notes on the other especially when important points were made or questions were not answered fully. It would also be fair to say that after a while the talks became routine and I always welcomed a challenging group with whom we could have a lively discussion instead of a one-way presentation. Pain can be anything from a minor dent, as when a marketing event does not produce the anticipated results, to a major process issue, as when reporting is not accurate. As you set out to find your customer’s business pain, you should remember that you are not necessarily looking for huge issues, rather you are looking for issues that hurt the profitability of the company. For example, I once worked with a company that sold calculators. This company had a process in place that automatically ordered more calculators when the computer showed only one left in stock. On one occasion they were getting rid of old stock and ordering newer models for sale. When the old stock's level hit one, the order system automatically sent a P.O. to accounting for ordering fifty more of that model. Sometimes the accounting department would catch the error and other -Calvin Coolidge Assessing the situation What happened to the other 48 people that received coaching three times a week, which included the exact tasks to accomplish and reach our goals of ranking organically in Google with select keyword targets? They experienced quick success in the first 6 to 12 months. Some even lasted up until the Florida Update, a Google algorithm change that occurred in December of 2004. The remaining 48 people did not learn quickly enough how to adjust to the new changes that Google required. Many of them went back to working their 9 to 5 jobs. They let go and gave up. The class of 50 was fortunate enough to simply follow a system. All we had to do was get up in the morning and spend at least 8 hours a day 5 to 6 days a week to accomplish those tasks. Deciding what I wanted to do After being homeless for only two days, I decided that I would never hit rock bottom again. The answer for me did not include going back to school, getting a degree or climbing the corporate ladder. Many people with MBAs and undergraduate degrees work at jobs where they are one paycheck away from being homeless. What motivated to work 15 hours a day, 7 days a week for the first 4 years of affiliate marketing? I felt this invisible force knocking on my shoulder every minute reminding me that if I didn't succeed I would wind up homeless and broke my entire life. I took up the sport of Judo at the YMCA in the seventh grade. I taught myself everything I needed to know without the guidance of a teacher. I always dreamed that I
