Viral marketing
At sometime in the past you have received an email message like this:
- Hi, my name is Stanley. I am in the Second Grade at the Alfred C. Packer Memorial Elementary School in Central City, Colorado. We are doing a project. We are trying to see just how many people we can reach with this message by email in 48 hours. Please forward this message to everybody in your address book and ask them to do the same.
Messages like this have filled email boxes to overflowing in a matter of hours, and have caused email services to have to be shut down because of overload to their systems within 24 hours of the first posting.
Viral marketing works in a similar way, except the vehicle is an ebook rather than an email message.
You write an ebook about some subject of interest to your target market. Throughout the book you place links to your site. You make it attractive enough that your customers want to pass it on to their customers.
The number of copies in circulation expands exponentially, as did the email message from little Stanley. Here is how it works:
- Suppose you send your ebook to four people and they each send it to four people
- Now 16 people have copies and they each send it to four people
- Now 64 people have copies
- Then 256
- Then 1024
- Then 4096
- Then 16384
If this process were to be repeated 10 times, your original book containing links to your website would be in the hands of 1,048,576 people. This is not too bad considering all you did was write a short but interesting book and email it to four people. :-)
The process is not quite this smooth and simple. First you must write a book that truly interests your readers. It must be something not only of interest to them, but something they feel they can pass on to their friends. Not everyone receiving it will immediately send it on to four of their friends. Some may send it to more than four, but others may do nothing with it.
People like free stuff. In this business, most sales offers include a whole pile of bonuses, indeed, most copywriters will tell you bonuses are often of more interest to prospective buyers than the product on offer. So everybody selling information products is always on the lookout for things to give away.
Ebooks are written in one of two formats: PDF or with an HTML ebook compiler.
PDF stands for ‘Portable Document Format’. It is a recognised standard format for ebooks. Whenever you download a document that needs to be read using an Adobe® Acrobat Reader, you are looking at a PDF file.
