Sometimes - we need a jolt.

Just a quick share. I was recently lucky, humbled and inspired enough to work with two severely disabled nine year old children - and their families.

If there was a lesson in how to put life into perspective, this would be it. I tried to imagine what it would be like to never eat food, to never drink water. Never move, share, sing, play, tell someone I love them or be able to respond when someone I love tells me they love me too.

What would it be like never to change position by myself, clean my teeth, wash, be able to go to the toilet, cook, hold someone, have a relationship, move that hair tickling my nose ... etc.

And still smile, and still laugh, and still be able to look at the world through shining eyes that understand everything being said and done around them.

And I was talking to one of these children about life, the Universe and everything in it, and telling him that I knew without a doubt that he could understand me, and that he could count on me to talk with him as an equal, and never talk down to him.

For the first time I got a direct response from a child who supposedly couldn't respond.

One tear rolled down his cheek, and is eyes smiled.

He is nine years old, and without a profound miracle it is doubtful whether he will live to be a teenager. He knows this. With one tear he transformed my life.

If he can do this, what cant we do?
