The times in between the panic attacks were the hardest for me, not knowing when the next one was going to strike. The ones that were the hardest were the ones that struck in the middle of the night. It's hard enough to wake up groggy, but to be in a full blown panic attack and not being able to grasp why you were suddenly unable to breathe or control your emotions was a double whammy.     I live near the ocean, and have spent a considerable amount of time at the beach watching the surfers. One day it hit me, as I watched the waves coming in to the shore that they were very similar to the panic attacks that I had. They too would come in waves and wash over me, and no matter what I did, or how strong I stood there was no stopping them and I could do little to overcome them or to even put a dent in them, in fact, it seemed that the stronger I would struggle and fight my way to the back of the wave, the harder they would be. The only thing that I would ever get out of it was a tired and worn out feeling that left me totally unprepared for the next wave.
