Take the need for affection. I believe that most people need affection to varying degrees. The need for affection can be met in a variety of ways and your spouse may prefer one over the other. You have to speak his/her language in order for them to understand that you are meeting that need. So, affection can be met by a variety of ways; a hug, giving a gift, writing a letter, and any other number of ways.
