Anarchism versus Marxism
Although anarchism and Marxism are both socialist political theories, and they share the view that a communal, participatory, voluntary, de-centralised society is an end goal worth pursuing, they differ in many respects, and should not be confused. Of course they are far from internally homogeneous theories themselves, but I’ll leave that issue to another entry. They tend to differ more when in comes to means, rather than ends. So they both criticise capitalist economy, bourgeois society, and the liberal democratic state, and they have both looked to the working class movement to bring their respective visions into fruition. But there differences are not trivial: for example, one of the most basic distinctions between Marxism and anarchism is that Marxists generally do not have an issue with organising themselves into hierarchies, whilst anarchists cannot countenance hierarchical structure within their organisations, they must always be based on equality and pure democracy.In this entry I will discuss (in as few words as possible) the anarchist and Marxist views on: capitalism, class, the state, history, parliamentary reform, revolution and culture. We take so much for granted in this world. We expect everything we buy to work perfectly and when it doesn't, we throw a tantrum. Well, can you imagine what the programmer who creates your medical billing software feels like when he fixes one bug and then another one pops up? What follows is a true story, which just goes to prove that the truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction.A medical billing software company was creating a new software package to bill UB-92 claims. Up until this point in time, they had only done NSF 3.01 specifications. So the first thing they had to do was get the specifications from the carrier and send them off to programming so that the programmer could begin work on them.A few weeks passed and the programmer had the specifications completed and was ready to test the module. So they set up some test claims and transmitted them to the carrier. When the test results came back, they showed that there were several fields that were transmitted in error. No problem. The programmer made note of the fields and made the changes. He then transmitted the claims again and waited for the results to come back.This is what happened.

In a speech at the 50th annual regular session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, IAEA chief Mohammed Elbaradei confirmed what many of us knew in praising China and Russia, which “currently have the most ambitious plans for short-term nuclear expansion.” Nine months ago, he might not have made that statement.Today, Russia has emerged as one of the more vocal proponents for, and aggressive strategists in, the full spectrum of the nuclear fuel cycle. From nuclear waste disposal to uranium mining and enrichment, and in moving forward to construct nuclear reactors, Russia could possibly become an even more significant future player in the nuclear sector than China is envisioned. Russia’s civilian nuclear chief Sergei Kiriyenko told Russian television earlier this week, “Russia believes 25 percent of the world’s market in nuclear fuel-cycle services, including uranium enrichment, is an optimal share.
