I've been wondering lately why people either get turned off, or uncomfortable, when I tell them that I pray a lot. One of the first responses I tend to get is, "I didn't know you were religious!" Well, what does that have to do with the fact that I pray? I am not affiliated with any organized religion and I haven't gone to church in a month of Sundays. But I have a deeply spiritual side and I find that the more I pray, the more I express my appreciation to the Creator for the good life that I have, the more blessings are bestowed upon me. Given that scenario, what makes my friends uncomfortable about my saying daily prayers and meditations?

I can come up with a couple of reasons: One, maybe the discomfort is a result of their not feeling worthy of having a direct link to God. Outwardly they think it's corny, but deep down, maybe they really don't think they deserve to have such a connection. I mean, how many well-intentioned but harsh teachings were drilled into us when we were kids, that told us "Lord, I am not worthy?" This statement is not supposed to be a put-down; it just affirms our need to stay humble. But it sends a very different message to a young, impressionable child.

    Retirement Community Report
With the popularity of retirement communities increasing, competition is as furious as ever. Gone are the days when most retirees moved to Florida to live out the final years. These same people are now deciding to stay closer to home so that they are in their comfort zone, as w

I remember as a young, impressionable child, that prayers were these long tedious archaic ramblings that had to be memorized and then recited as quickly as possible. I used to race through the Act of Contrition - which I seemed to need to say very frequently -- and for a long time, I never even heard what I was really saying. OhmyGodIamheartilysorryforhavingoffendedThee is pretty much how it all gushed out. I may have detested all my sins, but nobody listening to me pray would have ever understood that. But the point is that our religious upbringings tend to make a chore out of religious practice, when in fact communicating with the Creator can be exhilirating, inspiring and fun all at the same time! At least, after all of mumbled Acts of Contrition, I can now fully appreciate the powerful meanings behind those words. I thank God for allowing me to appreciate the beauty and power of prayer. I think He/She was just waiting for me to grow up a little. And to stop rushing through my nightly prayer time.
