A Successful Organizational Marriage: Cultural Integration is the Secret to a Successful M&A sed in the speaking arena. However, since that original Merger &Acquisition OverviewMergers and acquisitions (M&As) are a significant activity for many organizations. Yet most mergers are not successful, primarily because the “merger of two organizations is actually a merger of individuals and groups.” Buono and Bowditch, authors of The Human Side of Mergers and Acquisitions: Managing Collisions Between People, Cultures, and Organizations.A merger means that two previously separate organizations are combined into a third new entity. An acquisition involves the purchase of one organization by the new parent firm. M&A activity is characterized in the academic literature as an “organizational marriage,” complete with courtship. Cultural integration is often linked to a metaphor of a family where a parent who has departed is replaced by a step-parent. These relationship and familial metaphors illustrate the significant impact M&A activity can have on organizational life and its members.Unfortunately, few M&As make any effort to integrate different cultures and workforces, even though M&A activities bring about significant change involving employees, organizational entities, systems, shareholders, customers, and many other stakeholders.Companies initiate M&As for numerous business objectives, ranging from achieving market entry to gaining proprietary technology. Compan Corporate America vs. Work/Life Balance An acquaintance of mine coined the title phrase of this article in a discussion we were having regarding creating success in wholesale distribution. At the time, I perceived that to be “consultantese,” another clich? to be used in the speaking arena. However, since that original pMany businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to motivate, encourage, retain and recruit their staff, while optimizing productivity. One of the keys to satisfied and efficient employees is work/life balance. Due to societal changes, business culture, and employer expectations, personal time has decreased, and work time has seeped into personal time. Lunch time, which once was a relaxing diversion from work, has become a “Rush’N’Chow” experience, often in a cubicle. According to Joe Santana, the message sent to employees is: •Life and business have gotten tougher•You’ve got to work longer hours at a tougher pace•Skip meals and breaks•Skip vacations•Spend less time with family and friends•Pass over the invitation to play tennis or golf with your friends•Be manic and make the workplace, your place of worship, your home, your hobbyAll of these factors lead to emotional and physical stress for the employer, the employee, and their families. There are higher rates of absenteeism, difficulties in retaining or recruiting quality staff, increased family stress, depression, loss of productivity, and a general feeling of lack of balance and joyfulness.-Nearly 50% of all US workers feel overwhelmed by a growing number of job tasks and Payroll Alabama, Unique Aspects of Alabama Payroll Law and Practice article in a discussion we were having regarding creating success in wholesale distribution. At the time, I perceived that to be “consultantese,” another clich? to be used in the speaking arena. However, since that original For recent graduates, getting your job search moving in a positive direction can be a difficult task. Most recruiters tend to only fill jobs that require candidates that have at least several years of work experience so you might not get much help from them. For entry level positions, you might be competing with not only other recent graduates but with people with a few years of experience as well who might also be suitable for the job.One of the best ways to get your job search moving positively is through networking.Sure, you could email your resume off to dozens or hundreds of companies like everyone else does but remember that it takes one tenth the time to delete your email as it did for you to write it.When hiring managers get bombarded with resumes they tend to delete them and treat them like spam. There are better ways to utilize your time to get in touch with people who can positively influence your job search: 1. Speak with friends, family members and others who you know and let them know you are looking for a job. One of them might know someone who can help you.2. Make a list of companies you'd be interested to work for and call (on the phone, not through email) the manager of the particular area of interest and ask to meet with them for 20 minutes to learn more about their co Opening A Dollar Store - Focus on Payroll Cost Reduction eived that to be “consultantese,” another clich? to be used in the speaking arena. However, since that original For the entrepreneur who is opening a dollar store cost reduction is an ongoing challenge. It is a challenge that needs to be addressed in every aspect of the business. One of the most important areas of focus is payroll.Payroll cost reduction can be extremely difficult to achieve without an ongoing plan. If you are opening a dollar store that plan needs to focus on anticipated sales, with total payroll being a percentage of the projected sales. A monthly payroll target can be established against anticipated sales for the upcoming month. As weekly sales goals are achieved, small adjustments can be made to the next week’s payroll target. Two words of caution are warranted however. Don’t allow an extreme change in sales either up or down to drive radical changes to payroll your current staffing plans. Maintain control and make sure the change is long lasting and not just a one time occurrence. Next be sure that you are not creating too much uncertainty for your employees. If their scheduled hours are allowed to be jerked around significantly from week to week it is likely you will see higher than expected employee turnover. Unfortunately those who are able to leave first will generally be those who you can least afford to see leave. Many dollar stores find that sales during the Thanksgiving through Christmas timeframe are signi The Evolution of the Entrepreneur sed in the speaking arena. However, since that original perception, I have come to realize a deeper meaning in those words. Many people discuss real estate, banking/financial institutions, and other common investments that are know to most entrepreneurs. However, because we are new entrepreneurs, we need to create NEW investments! Many investors invest money and time into a project. When one buys a piece of real estate, one spends his/her time evaluating the property, discussing and negotiating terms, and preparing and signing contracts. After all of that time is invested, money now has to be invested to conclude the deal. These two elements are very common in the entrepreneurial world. Time and money; time and money; time and money! This is all entrepreneurs hear! “You have to invest a lot of time and money to make this business work!” I do not entirely agree with that common statement, but there is some truth to it. The point is, we as new entrepreneurs need to (at the risk of promoting a clich?) THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.You may be asking, “WHATS THE POINT? GET TO THE POINT!!” The point, my fellow business community members, is that if you/me/us/we ONLY invest time and money into a project, we are extremely limited in our choice of investment. The entire premise of being an entrepreneur is that we do not fall in line; we do not conform to the conventional; and we break boundaries and borders in order to pioneer an idea, product, or state of mind!K “It’s time to stop thinking about power and politics and start applying principle and process.” Principle and process form the baseline of effec
