And that's where you get stuck. Suddenly nothing comes. You can't think of a good complication. You created great characters in the beginning who got the action off to a great start. But now you have no idea what to do with them or even what makes sense to happen next. This is usually where writers block makes its entrance.

As you do, you'll discover things that not only make the character more interesting, but give you something to work into your story and give it more depth or an extra twist or turn.
So on this particular exploration, consider what secret your character has never told anyone. What is the one secret your character would die first rather than have anyone know about it? Even better, what is the one secret your character would kill to keep a secret?

And even though she never did it again and would never consider doing it again, there's no way in the world she wants anyone to ever know about it. Or maybe she did something small and nasty once when she lost her temper. Or maybe it's a huge secret involving rape or incest or murder. The enormity of the event doesn't matter. What does matter is that it is something your character never ever, in a million eons and maybe not even then, would ever want anyone to know. Because it involves and impacts how your character sees herself and how she wants others to see her. And maybe she hasn't ever been able to completely face it and deal with it. And until she does, it's unfinished business. Not a good thing for people, but its fabulous for fiction.
So for this session, answer these questions in writing:
Does your character's secret involve another person? If so, who?
Is that person related? A friend? A lover? A sibling?
How old was your character when this event occurred?
How did the events get started?
What is your character's secret? Describe in detail (and in writing) exactly what happened.
Has your character ever come to terms with it or is it still simmering away in the dark recesses of her unconscious and likely to come back to haunt her during your story?
If she hasn't dealt with it, why not?
