Your responsibilities as a writer is construct your story so as to meet audience expectations - resolve the Core Challenges (a well trodden definite process) and then to close the story at the stage of the Final Conflict by taking the audience through the (also well trodden) process of dissonance build up and release.

Don't be fooled by terminology such as "Final Conflict." All this applies to the vast majority of suceesfful movies, from The Godfather (1972) to Annie Hall (1977) to A Wonderful Life (1946) to The Gladiator (2000).
